For Children at Melville is an example of an integrated nursery program.
In this model typical children as well as some children with special
needs are educated side-by-side using a curriculum specifically
developed to enhance all children's development in cognition,
communication, social and physical development. Each
classroom has a dual certified early childhood/special education teacher
and two classroom assistants or aides. The class is comprised of
15 students some with special needs and some typically developing.
The program runs from September to June with a six week summer session
available. There is an outdoor play area and a school nurse
available for any medical needs that might arise. The children
enjoy weekly classes in music and dance-movement and each classroom is
equipped with a computer. The curriculum follows best practices in
early childhood education and offers the children a developmentally
appropriate environment where they can enhance and develop their skills
in all areas. Currently,
Alternatives For Children offers 2.5-hour classes with AM and PM
sessions available. The AM session begins at 9:00am and the PM
session begins at 12:30pm. Children are provided with a healthy
snack in each session at no cost. The Melville preschool program is
