Early Intervention Program

Early Intervention is available to children from birth through three years of age who meet eligibility requirements.  Early Intervention programs are regulated and funded by the New York State Department of Health, along with Suffolk County Division of Services for Children with Special Needs.  Alternatives For Children’s Early Intervention Program has been providing quality services to children with diverse needs since 1988, and offers initial evaluations and a variety of services throughout Long Island .  Services may be provided in the home, childcare setting, community setting, or in one of our Centers in East Setauket , Aquebogue, Southampton, and Melville.  Our credentialed staff has specialized in working with pediatric populations and includes physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, special education teachers, psychologists, social workers, service coordinators, vision therapists, music therapists, and movement therapists.  Our program is family-centered with the goal of helping parents understand and meet the needs of their child.

Initial evaluations assess the child’s communication, cognitive, physical, adaptive, and social-emotional development.  If it is determined a child is eligible for Early Intervention services, a team of professionals works together with the child’s family.  An Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) is developed and reviewed, and periodically updated to monitor and accommodate the child’s progress as well as the family’s needs.

Preschool Special Education Program

Alternatives for Children provides a special education program for Preschool Children with Special needs, age 3 years to 5 years of age.  The program is funded via the New York State Department of Education and the Suffolk County Division of Services for Children with Special Needs.  A comprehensive evaluation is first conducted to assess each child’s unique needs across academic, social, and motor domains.  Then, in coordination with the local school district, an Individual Education Plan is developed.  A determination of class size and ratio, program length and duration, and nature and frequency of services will also be made.

Our classes include both self-contained settings, along with both morning and afternoon integrated class sessions.  The integrated classes offer children with disabilities an opportunity to learn and grow alongside their typically developing peers. Emphasis on learning is placed on the acquisition of pre-academic skills, socialization with peers and adults pursued through the child’s natural venue for learning, play.   An enriched program is offered to students that provides a firm foundation and preparation for entry into Kindergarten and school-age integrated settings.

A variety of other learning opportunities are offered throughout the school day, which further enhance and enrich the student’s experience, including classes in Music, Dance, and Computer/Technology.

The students who attend Alternatives for Children also have an opportunity to participate in outdoor activities in our developmentally appropriate, handicapped accessible playgrounds.  At our East Setauket site, this includes play in our newly formed Sound Play Playground.  The Sound Play playground is unique in that if provides learning experiences for a variety of children with hearing, vision and other related disabilities using a multi-modality approach.
